Creating a New Measure
This article explains how Administrators can create new custom measures.
A Measure enables a user to set a goal for a client and measure the client’s progress over time. Administrators can create new Measures for your organization at any time and assign them to applicable programs.
To create a new measure:
- Click Measures.
- Click Create Measure.

- Enter the Measure Name for the new measure.

- In the Assessment Used field, enter the name of the assessment that the new measure is based on (e.g. Arizona Self-Sufficiency Matrix, VI-SPDAT, Pediatric Symptom Checklist (PSC 35), etc.).
Note: If the new measure is not based on a specific assessment, you can enter Not Applicable or just copy and paste the Measure Name.
- In the Measure Description field, describe the purpose of the new measure so a user will understand the goal of the measure.
Note: If the measure is based on an established assessment, you can just copy and paste the Measure Description from the assessment’s website.
- Click Add Field to start adding fields to the new measure.
Note: You can add multiple fields to the new measure.
- In the Add Field dialog box, enter the Field Name for the new field.
Note: This is how the field will be displayed in the database for import or export. The Field Label is what will show up in the measure. They do not have to be the same.

- Click the Field Type dropdown, and then select the corresponding option.
Note: Refer to the table below for instructions on adding specific types of fields.
Field Type
Instructions
Decimal
Use this field type when a user needs to be able to enter a number with a decimal (e.g. dollar amount)
Integer
Use this field type when you only want a user to be able to enter whole numbers.
Text
Use this field type when a user needs flexibility for entering data (e.g. case notes).
Note: If a user uses unstructured data, it is more difficult to take the raw data and analyze it despite its flexibility.
Dropdown
Use this field type if the field needs to have multiple options for a user to choose from.
Note: This is a single select field. Multi-select is planned for a future release.Display
Display text gives you the ability to add instructions for how to fill out a specific measure.
- In the Label field, enter the label you want to have a user see in the new measure.

- The Placeholder field allows you to put instructions directly in the field. When a user enters data into the field, the Placeholder text disappears.
- If applicable, enter a Default Value for the new field. If not applicable, leave this field blank.
Note: You can prepopulate field values with defaults to save your users time and improve consistency. Default field values make your users more productive by reducing the number of fields they must fill in manually.
- In the example above, the Field Type is Dropdown. Add the first Option, and then click Add Another Option to add all applicable fields.

Note: If you selected a different Field Type, there may be some additional fields that need to be filled out. - If you want to make the new field required, select Field is required.
- Once you have filled out all applicable fields, click Save Field. You can now see the new field you have added.
Note: You can add multiple fields to the new measure. Repeat steps 8-15 for each new field.
Note: You can save the new measure as a draft and continue to work on it until you are ready to publish it. It is also a good idea to click Save Draft regularly while you are working on the new measure.
- In the Cutoff Score field, click the dropdown arrow to select the field you want to set as the cutoff score for the new measure.

Note: The cutoff score field is the field your organization considers to be the target to reach for this outcome measure.
- In the Cutoff Score Value field, select the cutoff score field your organization considers to be the target to reach for this outcome measure. For example, in the new measure in the screenshot above, you would enter Yes in the Cutoff Score Value field.

Note: If selected the Cutoff Score Field is an Integer or a Decimal, you will enter a numerical value for the Cutoff Score Value. For example, if the scale is 1 to 5, you could enter 4 for the Cutoff Score Value. - In the Cutoff Score Comparison field, select the type of comparison you want to use to measure the success of this measure. In this example, you would select Equals to because a participant is successful if they say they feel safe in their afterschool program.
- Once you have entered all required fields for the new Measure, click Save Draft. You can now see a preview of the new measure.

- Once you have reviewed the new measure and are ready to share it with your organization, click Measure Actions, and then click Publish Measure. A confirmation message will appear.

- Click Publish Measure Your new measure is now ready to be assigned to applicable programs.
